It is safe to say that everybody in Whistler loves the outdoors. How could you not in such a beautiful place? It is also a good bet that the majority also enjoys great food and a full pitcher of ice-cold beer. It is a combination of these simple pleasures that inspires this list. Where can you soak up a stunning view and a cocktail at the same time? Work on your tan and also your appetite? Put your feet up in front of a roaring open fire while you plan tomorrow’s day on the slopes? Just ask yourself this; Where is Whistler’s best patio?

Whatever the weather in Whistler tourists and locals alike can be heard planning their day with the common phrase, ‘lets go find a patio’. With so many options in town it isn’t a particularly hard mission to accomplish, but finding the best one is a little bit more difficult. Perhaps that is why the number one spot is all about location, location, location. The Longhorn Saloon and Grill sits right at the heart of Skiers Plaza at the bottom of Whistler Mountain and as you exit the Whistler Gondola you can’t miss its huge patio complete with famous bright yellow umbrellas. From the patio’s perfect position you can watch skiers and bikers descend Whistler Mountain while you refuel after your own adventures on the hill. The patio is the largest in the village and has one of the only outdoor bars that is open almost all year around and catches the sun whatever the season.

If you’re lucky enough to get a table on a busy weekend it’s like having V.I.P. tickets to the best party in town. During Whistler’s signature events like the weekly ‘Fire and Ice’ Show in winter and ‘Crankworx’ bike festival in the summer, the Longhorn has front row seats.

If anything could let down such a perfect patio combination it is the slightly over expensive food and drinks menu, however, how can you put a price on such prime patio real estate?

The patio at Dusty’s narrowly misses out on number one in this countdown because it can’t boast the central village location that the Longhorn can. However, in winter especially, it hosts some of the best après parties in the resort. Situated in Creekside at the bottom of Whistler Mountain’s original gondola, Dusty’s is the local’s choice for open-air après ski. It has a huge ground floor patio with open fires and large picnic tables you can squeeze your entire group onto. Upstairs also opens out onto a sun-baked mezzanine, which has its own bar when it’s busy. On Sunday afternoons Dusty’s hosts hundreds of skiers and riders celebrating a successful weekend on the slopes in style before they head home.

Dusty’s also has great BBQ food to go with its reasonably priced drinks. This is partly due to patio’s annual hosting of the Canadian National BBQ Championships, when the countries best BBQ chefs battle it out over an August weekend.  Easily one of the hottest patios in Whistler, summer or winter.

The Den Restaurant and Lounge

This patio at Nicklaus North Golf Course changes the pace of a list that has so far focused mainly on the party patios. The Den not only boasts an excellent food and drinks menu at a surprisingly good price but it also has one of the best views in Whistler. The comfortable patio sits right on the edge of the beautiful Green Lake. On the far side of the lake are the unmistakable Rainbow and Wedge Mountains and at the foot of the patio golfers tee off at the 16th hole under the pressure of watchful eyes.

The Den is more than happy to welcome non-golfers and it’s a great place to stop after a walk or bike ride in Lost Lake Park. During the summer it is a picturesque patio where you can soak up the sun and enjoy a relaxing drink away from the busy village in Whistler’s beautiful outdoors.

Cittas

Cittas is a decent bar located just a short walk from the base of the mountain. It has some fair prices and good food but makes this list for one of the more important, if sometimes overlooked, characteristics of any great patio. Cittas is perfect for people watching. Right on the corner of the crossroads that make up the Village Square, easily the busiest section of Whistler’s bustling Village Stroll, the patio is the ideal viewpoint from which to watch Whistler’s diverse local and visiting cliental pass by. All of the major nightclubs are close by so it’s a good place to start the night and see what unfolds as wherever the party is you’ll be right at the centre of the action.

The Dubh Linn Gate Inn

The only authentic Irish pub in Whistler has always had excellent food (they put Guinness on everything) and the best selection of beer in town. However, only recently, after some well-timed renovation, does The Dubh Linn Gate gain a place in the outdoor drinking community’s hearts with a brand new patio.

‘The Dubh’ is located so close to the bottom of the Excalibur Gondola you could step right off the lift and into the après at the end of the day. The pub is famous for having exciting live music almost every night and full views of both Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain. The highlight is the large open fire that warms up partiers long into the night, especially in the winter and you’ll have to fight to get near it during the busy season. It goes without saying that this is where you should be to celebrate St. Patrick’s day in Whistler and for many it is first choice for après every other day of the year.
