Best Donut Shops in America
Donuts, or doughnuts, are as much a part of the American snacking culture as hot dogs and popcorn. Homer Simpsons’ sole existence would likely not be sustained without this popular pastry with a hole in it. Get rid of donut shops in America and you can declare that the terrorists have won.
In our never-ending mission to keep fun foods thriving in the country we have compiled a list of what in our opinion are some of the Best Donut Shops in America. It was tricky. We requested that our Followers on Twitter give us a heads-up about favorite spots in their cities in addition to doing our own extensive homework. We enthusiastically canvassed many “outside of the box” concept donuteries that unfortunately too often sacrificed taste for gourmet gimmicks. There was a lot of abuse of lavender flavorings which in our opinion better belongs in scented lotions and candles, not on top of sugary glaze and raised yeast. Keep the douche out of donut please – horrible pun intended (hopefully you didn’t get it). However more often than not we were pleasantly surprised with the unique flavor combinations that true pastry chefs and doughnut artisans created, so much that we did not mind the $3 to $6 price tags that accompanied each – Dunkin’ Donuts these offerings are not.
We are sure to have missed more than a few exceptional donut shops along the way so instead of getting upset please leave a Facebook comment below to let us know what spot in your neck of the woods we can visit to add to possibly add to this growing list. Until then, enjoy our take on the Best Donut Shops in America and be sure to add them to your traveling foodie itinerary when in any of these donut shops’ hometowns.

Alert the authorities because there is some serious abuse being done to donuts at Gourdough’s. The kind of abuse that will leave anyone that consumes their donuts in a sugar induced fetal position on the ground beside the bench where they ate their order from the Airstream trailer. The kind of abuse that leaves you scrubbing in the shower for hours trying to scrape off the calories. The kind of abuse that will wake you up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night wondering if it was all just a dream. And yet you would do it all over again.
Glazed and Infused Chicago
813 W Fulton Market, Chicago, IL
In our opinion a couple of the best donut shops in America are located in Chicago. One of those is Glazed and Infused. Of course every reviewer to pass through the doors of one of their five Windy City establishments will play on the name of the original shop and proclaim that their donuts are perfectly glazed and infused with a burst of flavor in each bite. In this instance we cannot resist the very same cliched description. Please excuse our lack of originality here in describing this Chicago donut, or doughnut, shop.
Doughnut Plant New York
379 Grand Street, New York, NY
Rooted in a recipe passed down through generations, infused with inventiveness and entrepreneurial drive, the Doughnut Plant New York locations (we can’t speak for the Japanese franchises) combine to dole out some of the best donuts in America.
Every glaze that graces a Doughnut Plant doughnut creates a silky yet subtly crisp surface that when penetrated releases a flavor burst that makes it feel as if every bite is the first.
Sublime Doughnuts Atlanta
535 Tenth Street NW, Atlanta, GA
22nd SW 3rd Avenue, Portland, OR
Say what you will, but no Best Donut Shops in America list could be complete without this famous addition. Sure, Voodoo Doughnut is nothing short of a tourist attraction in itself and for that reason you'll hear local hipster foodies complain that Voodoo Doughnut is overhyped and not as good as its counterparts in a town packed with hole in the middle pastries. We call B.S.
50 W. Randolph Street, Chicago, IL
Refraining from the inflated prices and posh decor of many of the other nouveau donut shops in the country, Do-Rite Donuts does not skimp on experimentation with a variety of flavor combinations and rest assured the lab has returned with some expert offerings for donut enthusiasts. As a morning / early afternoon only shop Do-Rite Donuts serves fresh donuts every minute of their limited hours of operation. They only make a maximum of three dozen at a time to ensure the freshness that they are heralded for so no matter when you happen to pass through the entrance you will be served a beautiful round new born pastry.
Dough Doughnuts Brooklyn
305 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn, NY
The ultimate no-frills joint among the Best Donut Shops in America. Dough Doughnuts in Bed-Sty Brooklyn is not fancy but the donuts are considered by many in the media to be the best in the country. Dough is a yeast only donut maker (no cake here folks) and that mastery of one single process is likely what makes them the best of the yeast.
Best Winter Wonderland Weekend Getaways in America
The holiday season is over but the magic of winter is in full swing in the Northern Hemisphere. While many head south for the season why not take advantage of the frosty conditions and partake in a once in a lifetime experience that will put that posh weekend in Aspen that your braggadocios friends won’t stop yapping about to shame? Here are our picks for the Best Winter Wonderland Weekend Getaways in America!
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Dates: January 4 to March 31/2013
Snow Village Montreal has thrown its chapeau into the ring and joined Sweden, Norway, Finland, Romania, and next door neighbor Quebec City in bringing the ice hotel experience to North America. But company president Guy Bélanger and crew have taken the concept one step further by creating a whole village of ice and snow around the chilled hotel experience. If that's not remarkable enough, in it's first year the Snow Village Montreal formed a scaled replica of the city of Montreal, with subsequent years allocated to constructing and emulating a new city altogether, each and every year ahead. In 2013, that city is New York!
For 2013, the hotel fits 15 rooms and 10 standard (keep in mind that there is nothing standard about Snow Village Montreal) suites to accommodate those daring to brave the cold for a night or two. There are also igloos, a heated glass igloo, a 60 person capacity restaurant, a bar seating 250 patrons, a fully functioning convention centre, and to top it all off, Snow Village Montreal is home to a wedding chapel made of ice - talk about getting cold feet!
Snow Village Montreal is the ultimate winter experience for those that have seen it all.
Hotel De Glace Quebec
Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
Dates: January 5 to March 24/2013
As the original ice hotel in North America, Hotel De Glace Quebec has been attracting curious souls into it's below freezing walls since 2001. But luxury is not lost for the sake of adventure as Hotel De Glace Quebec is one of the most beautifully constructed hotels on the planet, even if it all melts away in the spring. The service continues to be top notch, making guests feel snug and cozy, even in a palace made of ice.
Hotel De Glace Quebec's stellar reputation and continuous reinvention sets them apart from ever being considered just another gimmick (a la Dubai) in the unique accommodations industry.

Rideau Canal Ice Skating
Rideau Waterway, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Rideau Canal Ice Skating? Sure you can cram into the limited square footage of Rockefeller Center's famed manmade rink in Manhattan for a winter weekend ice skating trip but the best way to get a slice of ice to yourself is to head further North to the official "World's Largest Natural Ice Skating Rink" (Guinness Book). At almost 5 miles in length and an area that equals 90 full size hockey rinks, you won't have to bump elbows with anyone, unless you want to.
Imagine waking up to a crisp Canadian morning in an accommodation along the waterfront of the Rideau Canal Ice Skating rink, grabbing an early espresso, strapping on your skates, and gliding along the expansive canal for as long as you heart desires. The smile on your rosey cheeked face will fend off the frostbite.
The best time of the year to take in Rideau Canal Ice Skating is during Winterlude which takes place this year between February 1st to the 18th. Winterlude is a celebration of the season taking place in Ottawa that includes everything from Ice Sculpture Competitions and enjoying the activites in North America's largest Snow Playground to Jazz Festivals and Cuisine & Wine Tastings.
Be sure to stay at the luxurious yet playful Fairmont Château Laurier where you'll be a front door away from Rideau Canal Ice Skating and a variety of Winterlude activities. Packages during the month of February start at $209 CAD. Visit Fairmont Château Laurier for more info.
