Hours: Open Every Day from 5pm to closing

Smuggler’s Cove offers a whole new approach to rum by featuring a vast array of historic concoctions, traditional Caribbean drinks, classic libations of Prohibition-era Havana, and famous exotic cocktails from legendary Tiki bars—all under one roof. When asked “Why rum?,” owner Martin Cate says “There just isn’t a more fascinating spirit in the world.... Revolution, triumph, piracy, war, sailors, celebration, and unspeakable human tragedy are in every glass. No other spirit has the history or the versatility.” To celebrate such a diverse spirit, Smuggler’s Cove showcases over 200 rums from around the world, including our selection of rare and vintage rums in The Vault. To encourage exploration of its expansive collection, Smuggler’s Cove offers a rum club called The Rumbustion Society. Smuggler’s Cove rum also features its own exclusive, handcrafted rum: Eurydice, a 100% California grown and produced artisan product from the distillers at St. George Spirits.

The drink menu includes over 70 cocktails made from premium spirits and liqueurs, housemade ingredients, and 100% fresh citrus juiced in-house daily. And, if you think you’re up to the challenge, Smuggler’s Cove will give you a special punch card to track the cocktails you’ve imbibed at Smuggler’s Cove. Drink your way through the whole menu, and you’ll receive an exclusive gift and merit badge! Smuggler’s Cove is proud to have a crew of expert bartenders and mixologists behind the bar who have honed their craft at some of the top spots in San Francisco and Los Angeles, including Gitane, Heaven’s Dog , Malo, Range, Seven Grand, Trader Vic’s, and The Varnish. Smuggler’s Cove’s interior was inspired by several historic tiki bars & legendary San Francisco watering holes, with special emphasis on nautical décor, and provides a dramatic and inviting escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

YAH Says...

Smuggler's Cove

Come early (open at 5PM) if you expect to get a cozy spot in one of the best tiki (pirate?) bars in america. There's literally only room for 49 people within so expect a line if you come later in the evening or on a weekend. Keeping capacity at bay in this Bay Area nautical bar is a part of what makes Smuggler's Cove so appealing. In addition to having elbow room to mingle comfortably the tiki theme is not tacky or obtrusive on your perhaps more polished senses of interior decor. Smuggler's Cove manages to make patrons feel as if they are gathered together as a crew in the comfortable hull of a Caribbean bound ship from centuries ago - complete with an endless supply, and variety, of rum. Within one step indoors you feel as if you're in a different time and place and the building line outside be damned, this place is too damn cool to leave until closing.

The decor is not what makes Smuggler's Cove so special however, it's the mastery behind that bar that makes the magic happen. Locals know that drinks may take a little longer to pour at Smuggler's Cove because the expert bartending crew take the time to get the measurements and combinations just right. Some of the more popular tropical mix drinks at Smuggler's Cove can include a combination of almost a dozen ingredients and the staff behind the counter is there to ensure that the balance is perfect in each glass. It may seem like a rum swigging good time lining the bar - and it is - but the mixology maintained at Smuggler's Cove is a downright science. If you're hungry then be sure to grab your grub on the streets outside of the bar beforehand because Smuggler's Cove is a specialized bar and doesn't bother maintaining a kitchen and to do so, in our opinion, would water down the experience. You'll be too busy soaking up the atmosphere to even notice your rumbling belly anyways.

Smuggler's Cove San Francisco

For those hardcore tiki enthusiasts, Smuggler's Cove holds Tiki Central Night every Tuesday. Tiki culture and the aloha shirt clad crew from the Bay Area and beyond converge upon this treasure on Gough Street in San Francisco and take things up a notch with respect to Smuggler's Cove tiki theme. Everything at Smuggler's Cove, from drink to decor, is an adventure into the exotic.

Without question, Smuggler's Cove is the best drinking bar in San Francisco.
