Top Eateries Only The Locals Know About In Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is such a concentrated tourist center that it is difficult to nail down dining establishments that are "best kept secrets" or "hole in the wall" joints that are heralded and frequented almost exclusively by locals. Therefore we implemented our best top secret, investigative and detective type methods (we asked a couple of guys) and undercovered these little P.V. gems.

La Chata Restaurant

Paseo Díaz Ordaz 708, Centro, 48300 Puerto Vallarta

La Chata has been around since 1942. In a land of tourists where eateries come and go depending the economic fluctuations of a co-dependent industry, that kind of longevity says something about the support received by the local community.

La Chata is that place where if you know someone living in Puerto Vallarta and you come to visit, they will take you there on your very first night and maybe again before you leave. This is due in part not only for the fact that they have great authentic food, live music and terrific view of the boardwalk, but the prices are simply hard to beat. In this instance, you won't mind if your pals are being frugal on "their treat" night.

Doña Clemen

Guadalupe Sánchez 851, Centro

Go ahead and try to Google this place. Forget it! Even though you can't find it, its the place you've been looking for. Dona Clemen is a true locals "in the know" eatery in Puerto Vallarta, found in the Centro district with no GPS coordinates. They've been around for 20 years to be exact. The food is so good they have been known to run out of rations at the end of the day, or frustratingly in the middle of the day at times. So don't have your heart too set on one particular item when arriving at Dona Clemen in the PM. With that being said, make every effort to secure yourself the house specialities; Pozole, tamales oaxaquenos and chiapanecos.

Since its a bit of a trek away from tourist central, be sure of the hours of operation. Dona Clemen is open mon - sat, 8:00am-4:00pm & 6:00pm-10:30pm; sun,9:00am-1:00pm. Local aquaintances or taxi drivers will get you there no problem.
