Beachcomber Cafe Crystal Cove

No day spent in the comforting arms of paradisiacal Crystal Cove should pass without spending an hour dining on the patio of Beachcomber Cafe. Even if you have to wait two hours to score that seat. Put your name on the list and grab a pager from the hostess and enjoy the sites of the gift shop, visitor center, beach, and historic cottages surrounding the establishment to make time fly. Once that pager vibrates and you're in you'll be able to celebrate your patience while relaxing on the best restaurant patio in the Newport Beach area.

While only in business since 2006 the Beachcomber has become as much of a Crystal Cove staple as the weathered beach cottage ruins that mock real estate developers along this prime stretch of Orange County coast. It was built to accommodate casual to fine dining tastes but maintains a demeanor that allows sand crusted flip flops and damp board shorts to take a seat at their tables. If you've come just for drinks Beachcomber's Bootlegger Bar complete with old salty dogs swapping seafaring stories can be found along its southern edge. You'll notice their 1948 Ford Woody Wagons (etc...) parked up the hill. The scene here is perfectly set.

The menu at Beachcomber Cafe speaks to the demands of local and visiting beach bums. It transitions exquisitely into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Start the day in Crystal Cove with their signature Crystal Cove Omelet (w/apple-wood maple smoked bacon, avocada and white cheddar cheese) or Coconut-Macadamia Pancakes (w/baked-in macadamia nuts coconut syrup!) while washing it down with a coffee, or morning mimosa. View the complete breakfast menu here. Those arriving for light lunch will want to order the Tiny Ahi Tacos (w/Ahi tuna, Asian slaw, and kicked with Sriracha aioli) while bigger appetites would be wise to request one of the best burgers on the Newport coast, the Beachcomber Kobe Burger (half-lb of American Kobe beef, maple bacon, lettuce, onion, sun-dried tomato aioli, choice of cheese and sandwiched in a caramelized bun - pictured above). View the complete lunch menu here. Come dinner seafood aficionados will want to slice into the Grilled Swordfish (Pacific Swordfish w/pecan butter, bearnaise sauce, potato purée, and sautéed baby spinach) and meat lovers can get messy with the BBQ Baby Back Ribs (half-rack pork ribs, hickory BBQ sauce, creamed corn, and sautéed spinach). View the complete dinner menu here.

The Beachcomber fits perfectly into this concave corner of paradise along the Newport Coast as a provider of beach day sustenance, helping make Crystal Cove a convenient but true Southern Californian retreat.

Crystal Cove Shake Shack Newport Beach

Incomparable scenery aside, the highlight of nearly anyone's visit to Crystal Cove in Newport involves a milkshake at Ruby's Shake Shack. It's the cherry on top, pun fully intended.

If you're down in the cove then you have the benefit of burning a few calories as you ascend the challenging wooden steps to the Shake Shack. You'll need it after consuming a thick, rich, creamy, and flavorful blend of fresh milk and ice cream. If you're driving the Coast Highway then keep an eye on the ocean side between Newport and Laguna Beach where this iconic eatery/creamery stands. You can't miss it. The full parking lot and line-up at the window is a dead giveaway.

The Shake Shack may fall under the Ruby's Diner brand, a plus for some and a minus for others, but it is embraced by nearly everyone. While the Shake Shack serves sandwiches, burgers, and fries their main focus of course is the almighty milkshake and it translates into taste. The milkshake menu is more expansive than the one found at full-service Ruby's restaurants which is a big part of why it is a destination point for many. Perhaps patrons say so because they're biased by the Crystal Cove view, but the milkshakes here simply "taste better". In fact, they taste better than any other in Newport Beach.

Must-have orders include the Oreo Cookie Fantasy, the Peanut Butter Cup, the Salted Caramel, the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and the flavor bursting Black Cherry milkshake. You'll need to pencil-in multiple visits to experience this expert gauntlet of sippable ice cream. Bring a date and grab two straws or come and enjoy one all to yourself (the best way, honestly).

Al Cappuccino's Coffee House

Al Cappuccino's Coffee House is a great local cafe located within an outdoor plaza (look for the Jack In A Box on the corner) off of Pacific Coast Highway. The staff is great and the patrons found hanging out at Al's only add to the mellow beach town vibe that exists here. We can't think of a better place in Newport Beach to pull into before heading off to work or play, to grab a coffee, pastry and friendly small talk.

Bacon Mania Food Truck

Cleanse your arteries weeks before because you'll want to prepare to indulge at this Costa Mesa (Orange County) food truck. It will take a lot more than seven degrees of separation to keep you away from this Bacon when passing by and the scent hits the air. Bacon Mania is the only appropriate name for a menu that interjects the pork product into ever order on site. Grilled cheese variations - Jack Back Sammie - and hot dogs wrapped in this wonderfully salty meat treat are no surprise but when you encase rolled up Mac 'n' Cheese and call it Bacon Bites you've entered into whole new territory of fun culinary awesomeness. They take it another step further by introducing the PB&J & Bacon, resulting in a sweet and salty creation for the record books. The most satisfying from the sinfully wonderful menu comes in the form of the Chili Con Bacon, additionally flavored by hickory and beer. The husband and wife team that brought Orange County the Bacon Mania food truck have created the perfect marriage between bacon, and everything else.

NEXT TIME WE'LL...

...try the Brownie Bites - Chocolate bite sized brownies, rolled in bacon, deep fried and drizzled in chocolate syrup. Wait...why didn't we have this the first time around??

Jane's Corndogs Newport Beach

Looking for a surefire way to give way to temptation and kill your beach body diet? Jane's Corndogs by the Newport Beach Pier will serve that purpose. Jane's offers up beach confession food on steroids and even the most staunch nutrition guru can't help but cave to the scents and sights that wander out of this fast food joint at McFadden Place.

The portions at Jane's are big, but not so massive that you'll be made immobile for the day after shoveling back your order on the bench fronting this hole-in-the-wall eatery. The corn dogs are exactly what corn dogs should be while the chili dogs and fries are sloppy, salty, cheesy, and quite frankly exquisite. Other highlights at Jane's include their lemonade, chocolate-dipped frozen bananas, and the wide variety of ice cream bars and flavors. One flavor in particular, their Peanut Butter & Twix, is so good it's stupid. Keep in mind that their large cones topple over with mountainous scoops so please use two hands when operating, for safety.

Jane's Corndogs is simply dangerous, especially in the wee hours of the night where they capture you spilling out of Baja Sharkeez around the corner at 1 AM, leading you to violate your body further by ordering all of the above. Not a Sunday morning in a Newport Beach goes by without the of-age college crowd waking up to chili dog stains on their t-shirts. Jane, don't stop this crazy thing because we'll be back for more.
