Tradewind Graphics Maui

No, we're not including a graphic design shop within our Maui shopping section to be cute nor are we making an attempt to be more than an alternative travel guide, throwing our hats into the ring along with countless other online business directories. We've included Tradewind Graphics Maui to account for their awesome selection of custom tiki mugs for sale.

While many tourists unfortunately start their tiki mug collection with a purchase from one of the local ABC Stores the inscription on the base of the faux ceramic assembly line creations read Made in China. You're not getting quality merchandise, nor supporting the local arts, nor bringing the power of Lono into your home as a protector. In fact, you may be setting yourself  for some bad island luck by buying a tiki from an ABC Store. OK, maybe that statement is a little dramatic but you are very likely to crack these purchases after one cycle in the dishwasher so you're really not saving a penny when starting that tiki collection on the cheap. Instead, new tiki enthusiasts are best served (and a service to) by buying a tiki from a local artisan. One of the best tiki mug designers on Maui is found within the walls of suite 411 at Kihei Commercial Plaza, inside Tradewind Graphics. Took awhile to get to the point huh?

Graphics aficionado and tiki mug design master (a hand in hand trade on Maui?) Rob Hawes has been running the Maui Tiki website as an online guide to all things tiki on Maui for quite some time and houses an amazing authentic tiki mug collection inside of his print shop. Some are on display for show & tell purposes but you can also nab a one of a kind tiki mug from the shop should something catch your eye as a perfect piece to add to your home, cafe, or bar decor back on the Mainland. And if you happen to be on the island with a sudden need for a three-fold brochure then Tradewind Graphics on Maui is your spot for that too.

Note: Not lucky enough to be on Maui at the moment? Order a tiki mug online from Maui Tiki and they'll bring a touch of island paradise to you.

Mele Ukulele Wailuku

From Kaahumana Avenue Mele Ukulele shop isn't much bigger than a box. However it's aged white exterior paint accented by a cracked outline of pastel blue with hints of Hawaii's most treasured instrument within is unavoidably welcoming. Passer-byers cannot help but park and venture in, even if their mission was keep driving to Kahului Bay, the Shops at Wailea, or another attraction found on West Maui's northen side.

What Mele may lack in square footage they make up for in ukulele section, reasonable prices, friendly service, and all-around aloha. Their inventory proudly displays locally handmade Mele koa and mahogany ukuleles, including their signature double-holed design which allows for a more ampliphied sound (make sure your skills are sharp before owning one of these). For those not quite looking for a masterfully crafted treasure more affordable high-quality imported ukuleles are available with the Hula line carried in the store, which come in mahogany, cedar, and spruce. Mele also counts other imported ukuleles for those picking one up and plucking for the first time. The generous shop provides a free ukulele case with each purchase (at the time of this review) and we're not talking about the cheap cardboard of paper-thin nylon ones. Whether staying in Lahaina or Kihei a road trip to Wailuku for your first or fifteenth ukulele is worth the mileage.
