Holualoa Ukulele Gallery

We admit that there is nothing groundbreaking about directing those visiting any island in Hawaii to a shop that sells ukuleles. Next to Macadamia Nuts and the Duty Free Dole 3 Pack of pineapples, purchasing a souvenir ukulele on any one of the islands is tourist prerequisite number three.

However, a trip to the Hilu'aloa Ukulele Gallery in Kailua, Kona will have you singing a different tune. At the Holu'aloa Ukulele Gallery, YOU get to make your very own ukulele. The hitch? You'd better be in town for at least two weeks!

Hilu'aloa Ukulele Gallery workshop owner Sam Rosen holds 70 hour courses over a span of 10 days - that's 7 hours per day - where participants immerse themselves in the process of building their very own ukulele, constructed from the Big Island's most prized natural possession - Koa - the rich, curly, butterscotch toned wood seen in upscale hotels, resorts and high end art galleries all over Hawaii. While 10 seven hour days of building, shaping, sanding, stringing and tuning doesn't sound like much of a relaxing vacation, the very first day wisely has participants shape a small thin plank of koa into the silhouette shape that the plucky island instrument is known for, and from that inspiring moment on, the pride of creating something so special (and actually recognizable) takes over and your hooked from there on in.

Sam is a pleasure to be around. His patient demeanor, humor, candor, story telling ability, and strum sessions throughout the day, each day, have you eagerly anticipating the finish line to the finished product so that you too can channel your inner Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is only ten days and a well worth-it *$1000 away.

*$1000 for a rewarding course like this AND the indigenous koa wood used to make your very own masterpiece is a great bargain as far as we are concerned.

Happy strumming!

5. Koa Coffee Plantation

Address : 82-1213 Greenwell Mountain Road, Captain Cook, HI 96704

About Koa Coffee Plantation  From Management Website

Our plantation is a family owned and operated business that was established in 1997 and continues to grow each year. We are located in the small town of Captain Cook and situated on the slopes of the Hawaiian volcano, Mauna Loa, at the ideal elevation of 2,500 ft.

Because of the high elevation, sun drenched mornings, cloud covered afternoons and abundant rainfall, our coffee beans mature more slowly. This enables them to obtain a large size and a superb grade.

Our vertically integrated farm allows us to control the quality of our Kona Coffee from the cherry hand picking to milling.

We have a state-of-the-art wet mill facility from Colombia, a dry mill from Brazil and our entire parchment/green bean is temperature and humidity controlled.

Koa Coffee Plantation takes its name from street name of the farm location, Koa Road.

At Mountain Thunder, we will teach you about coffee from bean to cup. Our tours, we have been told, are the most individual, coolest, helpful and informative tours, which are often the highlight of any vacation in Kona.

Mountain Thunder has been featured on over 7 international and national television networks. For your enjoyment, you can visit one or both of our two locations where you can view some of our television appearances.

Mountain Thunder has won so many awards and honors over the last 6 years that we now judge the most prestigious cupping contest in Kona. We are honored to direct "Gevalia's Kona Coffee Cultural Festival's Kona Coffee Cupping Contest". We have also won 14 awards from different areas of scrutiny such as chef's choice, people's choice, newspaper polls, and barrista championships.

At this point, we are doing everything on location, so we can talk to you about our experiences all the way from the agricultural component to the bagging and brewing of Kona Coffe.

Both of our locations are Certified Organic Farms.

And of course, the most important aspect of our tour is the tasting of our 100% Premium Private Reserve coffee brewed as a 6 oz Americano-style coffee. We can also talk to you about duplicating our coffee brew in your home if you wish. We are working on making it easier to get to the farm, with directions directly from our website printed on rack-cards or our automated tour line, 888-414-5662.

We do hope to see you soon. We open at 9 am, and tours start on the hour, every hour, from 10am-4pm. Our last tour starts at 4pm. Tours are available Monday through Saturday at our Kaloko location and Monday through Sunday at our Kainaliu location.
