Do-Rite Donuts

Do-Rite Donuts comes off as less fancy or gimmicky than some of the other Best Donut Shops in America list of which it is included. That’s how it should be. When you see a donut shop omit the “ugh” from the more technically sound doughnut you know they don’t take themselves too seriously.

Although they refrain from inflated prices and posh decor Do-Rite Donuts does not skimp on experimentation with a variety of flavor combinations and rest assured the lab has returned with some expert offerings for donut enthusiasts. As a morning / early afternoon only shop Do-Rite Donuts serves fresh donuts every minute of their limited hours of operation. They only make a maximum of three dozen at a time to ensure the freshness that they are heralded for so no matter when you happen to pass through the entrance you will be served a beautiful round new born pastry.

Our favorite break of dawn order is the Coffee & Cream which goes down like a sweet latte rolled in dough.  Our late morning pick is the Peanut Butter & Banana which would raise Elvis from his grave for an early lunch. However, any time of the day is right to get tipsy from the rich Caramelized Pineapple Rum. If you happen to be in town on a Monday, be sure to get naughty with the XXX Mocha Bar, barring any unforeseen change in the Daily Specials. Finally, the novelty must-try of the lot is the Candied Maple Bacon, albeit we admit that the whole maple bacon donut thing is slowly jumping the shark, so consume them while you can because we predict a drop off in that combination over the next few years.

Chilam Balam is a chill Mexican food joint in the Lakeview East neighborhood of Chicago. An often heard descriptor for Chilam's is that it is a "Mexican restaurant with a punk rock twist". While we can't claim to be sure what that means (no Sid Viscous posters on the wall), we can testify to the uniqueness of the establishment, and "unique" in this sense, is a good thing (not always the case).

First off, the menu is organic based, with real deal homemade ingredients that put canned queso cheese to complete and utter shame. We're not even sure you can find a can opener in the kitchen at Chilams. In addition to whole foods, Chilam's is all about attention to detail, from the prep time to presentation and everything in between. They even use a special herb in their dishes that minimizes the...ahem...gas, experienced after eating a few too many beans. We can definitely get behind that concept! Getting to the goods, we recommend the Flautas (stuffed with chicken thigh and rajas, chipotle sauce, pickled cabbage, carrots and crema), Ravioli Empanadas, Corn Masa Memelas (w/black beans, aged goat cheese, arbol salsa and dressed shoots) and the Grilled Flank Steak (w/roasted potato, crispy onion, guajillo chile and cilantro). Any of of those dishes will leave you happier than a jalapeño. Not sure what that means either, but it sounded good.

NEXT TIME WE'LL...

...try the Sweet Empanadas (w/peanut butter filling, seasonal compote, and Oaxacan chocolate). We were too stuffed from the entrees so next time it's drinks and dessert only!

Glazed and Infused Chicago

In our opinion a couple of the best donut shops in America are located in Chicago. One of those is Glazed and Infused. Of course every reviewer to pass through the doors of one of their five Windy City establishments will play on the name of the original shop and proclaim that their donuts are perfectly glazed and infused with a burst of flavor in each bite. In this instance we cannot resist the very same cliched description. Please excuse our lack of originality here in describing this Chicago donut, or doughnut, shop.

Glazed and Infused chefs are exactly that - chefs. To consider them to be anything less (i.e. baker) would be a disservice. Pastry chefs and business partners Tom Culleeney and Scott Harris are true artisan doughnut makers. We have seen every twist on the gourmet doughnut concept all over America and far too often we've come across overpriced failed experiments with flavor combinations that look great on menus and social media posts but simply don't translate to taste. You won't find that problem at Glazed and Infused.

You can count your blessings if you happen upon Glazed and Infused during one of their Seasonal Glazed releases that hands you a yeast raised doughnut ring with seasonal homemade glaze. Our favorite time of the year at Glazed and Infused is during Christmas where you will be lucky to nab the yule log like Buche de Noel or (and!) a Mint Chocolate (both pictured). The other days of the year are still packed with pastry treasure. We have yet to find as truly a sexy doughnut as the Red Velvet - a cocoa buttermilk cake with cream cheese glaze & red velvet crumbles - orgasmic. The must-try of the lot (although they could all be considered to be) is the Crème Brûlée - a vanilla crème brûlée filled Bismark with brûléed sugar crust.

Glazed and Infused in Chicago is not a novelty donut shop, they are in the business of true artisan pastry that just happens to be one of America's favorite comfort desserts. No need to dunk these donuts however, they are perfect as is.

Big & Little's Restaurant is the creation of two lifelong best friends who opted out of the 9 to 5 world and took to offering amazing affordable food with a gourmet twist and taking it to the North Side neighborhood of downtown Chicago. This diner styled eatery has been open since 2009 but already as a steady legion of followers that frequent the establishment for food as comforting as what you find at home, if your mother or grandmother had a flare of decadence in the kitchen.

Big & Little's Foie Gras

While our first recommendation doesn't sound all that decadent, the Pork Belly Po'Boy is yet another tempting take on what is fast becoming one of the most popular hand foods in America. However, attempting to hold this "sandwich" in your grip proves tricky as it's so big it has to be served in a basket. The tender cubes of pork still find a way to overflow both out of the sides of your dish and with flavor. Shredded lettuce and dill pickles provide a nice accent but the maple glaze, tinted with a subtle hint of louisiana hot sauce, is the key to the tasty kick of the Pork Belly Po'Boy. Next up is the utterly unique Foie Gras Fries. The shoestring budget gourmet meal double fries the shoe string sized fries for extra crsip, then adds the key ingredient of succulent foie gras (duck fat), topped with the very juice formed in its pan. This vegan nightmare is one of the tastiest things we've laid our beaks on in Chicago. Anywhere else you're looking at a price tag of $30 for the expensive delicacy of duck, but at Big & Little's the price tag is small at only $12! Finally we have to recommend the Fish & Chips. The cod fillet is so big you can't fathom being able to finish this basket of seafood and fries but the beer battering, rammed with a homemade tartar sauce creates the most tender, light, and crunchy F & C combo in Chicago.

It's no secret where Big & Little's gets its name - BIG food, BIG flavor, LITTLE prices - what a concept!

Featuring pork and fish/seafood preparations, the menu is best described by Kahan and Huston as “pristine product, simply prepared,” an approach to food Kahan has long espoused in all of his kitchens. The Publican boasts the simplest cuisine of all three properties, each dish stripped of adornment and containing only essential ingredients. The menu is presented in sections: Fish, Meat and Vegetables, each laid out from lightest to heaviest fare.
